‘Filthy’ is a relative notion

Yes, it is. And this challenge of The Daily Post is a REAL CHALLENGE to do in English!

Filthy

Filthy is a relative notion. One person’s concept of ‘filthy’ is not the same as that of another person. It can even be different in one person as well! Can you believe it! Different in one person!

Yes! Different in one person. Okay, let’s not talk about every person, let’s talk about me. It depends on how I feel. Is it a happy day, no worries at all, everything is good, but if I am tired, not feeling well, a bit irritated or nervous, then I may be more finicky about things like dirt and filth and filthiness. Are you the same?

Filthy is a relative notion, like many other things. For example. When my eggs are fried in oil, and they use too much oil, and my fried eggs are oily … grrrrr … but when it is fried in butter, real butter, lots of butter, and the melted butter is poured over the fried egg … yummy! 🙂 Do you understand what I mean? Oily is a relative notion!

The idea of filthy varies from one person to another. If I see how certain people live, how dirty the surroundings are, I can’t help to shudder in disbelief, but when I look at the same people and see that they are happy in their surroundings, I sometimes wonder of the problem isn’t me? My concepts? My ideas? And if a ‘real clean’ person would visit me in my ‘relatively clean’ house, perhaps they have to hide a shudder or two as well! Who knows!

Back to ‘different in one person’. Let me give another example of myself: When I am at home and go to my hometown, I wouldn’t buy takeaways from any street stall. Even if it looks clean, I may imagine myself that it is not clean. When I go on holidays in one of the ‘not so clean’ countries, I buy my food from the streets, walk in the informal markets where running rats are visible, and I don’t care too much! Finicky, I think!

Now, my question to you is: Are you sometimes more finicky than other times? Are you super clean and don’t want to be nearer than 10 km from a germ? When do you feel something is filthy?

  1. En ek bly maar verstom as jy die Engels so kafdraf, Toortsie. Ekself is nie juis gepla oor ander se “filthy” geite nie. Ek hou net eenvoudig verby.

    1. O, die drie apies nogals! 🙂
Jong, Google moet help, en my ou woordeboek sedert 1972 en as dit hoe is, my vriendin in Grootfontein!

Ek hoop my skrywe is verstaanbaar.
    Groete.
